De La Soul is the Long Island hip-hop trio that rewrote what rap could sound like. Formed in Amityville in 1988 by Posdnuos (Kelvin Mercer), Trugoy the Dove (David Jude Jolicoeur, 1968-2023) and Maseo (Vincent Mason), their debut 3 Feet High and Rising (1989) launched the Native Tongues movement: sample-rich, playful, daisy-age, daisy-age. Eight studio albums, a Grammy, a 30-year catalogue that finally returned to streaming in 2023, and a lifelong commitment to the craft.
